Groups of 2 and 3 black notes

black notes piano lessons Jul 09, 2020

The first step in figuring out the notes on the piano is to understand the black notes. The black notes are separated into two different groups. Groups of 3 black notes and groups of 2 blacks notes. Those 2 groups alternate back and forth. When you look at the piano you will see a group of 3, 2, 3, 2, 3 etc. Take a moment and see if you can see the groups of 2 or 3 black notes on the piano.

EXERCISE 1:

Now try and play, with curved fingers, all of the groups of 2 black notes on the piano.

EXERCISE 2:

Now try and play, with curved fingers, all of the groups of 3 black notes on the piano.

Exercise 1 & 2 are quick. Do them daily for a week and it will give you a strong foundation to build upon when we learn the next step in figuring out the notes on the piano!

The other two concepts you should be familiar with at this point are finger numbers and recognizing up and down on the piano which I cover those concepts in my book and on my website.
